Time Management Tips for IPMAT
IPMAT requires speed + accuracy across Quantitative Ability (QA), Verbal Ability (VA), and sometimes Logical Reasoning (LR) (Rohtak, JIPMAT). Here are section-wise strategies and overall tips:
General Time Management Rules
-
Don’t stick to one question: If you’re stuck beyond 90 seconds (MCQs) or 2 minutes (Short Answer in Indore), mark it for review and move on.
-
Play to your strengths first: Attempt easy/medium questions quickly to secure marks, then return to tougher ones.
-
Use the review feature smartly: In CBT, mark questions you’re 50-50 about, revisit only if time remains.
-
Keep track of sectional timers: Both Indore and Rohtak have strict sectional timing. Don’t waste energy worrying about the next section.
Time Management – IPMAT Indore (120 minutes, 3 sections)
Section |
Time Allotted |
Suggested Split |
Strategy |
---|---|---|---|
QA (MCQ) – 30 Qs |
40 mins |
1 min/Q avg |
First scan for easy ones (arithmetic/algebra basics). Skip lengthy geometry/probability initially. |
QA (Short Answer) – 15 Qs |
40 mins |
2–2.5 min/Q |
No negative marking – attempt all. Prioritise manageable sums, leave tough ones for end. |
Verbal Ability – 30 Qs |
40 mins |
1–1.2 min/Q |
Start with RCs (2–3 passages). Save Para-jumbles/Summary for last since they’re quick but tricky. |
Key Tip: Don’t enter QA (SA) tired – it needs calm calculation. Finish QA (MCQ) without draining mental energy.
Time Management – IPMAT Rohtak (120 minutes, 3 sections × 40 mins)
Section |
Suggested Order of Attempt |
Strategy |
---|---|---|
QA – 40 Qs |
Start here |
Secure marks with arithmetic/algebra first. Don’t waste >90 sec/Q. |
Logical Reasoning – 40 Qs |
Second |
LR can be time-eating (puzzles). Attempt linear/circular seating last if time. Prioritise series, coding-decoding, syllogisms. |
Verbal Ability – 40 Qs |
Last |
Focus on RCs (main idea + inference Qs first). Attempt vocab/grammar fill-ups quickly at the end. |
Key Tip: Many students over-spend on LR puzzles. Limit yourself to 15–18 mins max per puzzle set.
Time Management – JIPMAT (150 minutes, 100 Qs, no sectional timing)
-
Flexible but tricky – you decide the order.
-
Best strategy:
-
Start with Verbal Ability & RC (34 Qs) → scoring is fast.
-
Move to Quantitative Aptitude (33 Qs) → pick arithmetic first, then algebra/geometry.
-
End with DI & LR (33 Qs) → time-consuming but mechanical, good for the last stretch.
-
Key Tip: Use the first 5 mins to scan all three sections, then decide your personal order.
Practical Tips for All IPMATs
-
RC Passages: Don’t reread multiple times – skim, understand tone, and jump to questions.
-
Short Answer (Indore): Always write something – no negative marking.
-
Rough Work: Keep it neat; many lose time hunting through messy calculations.
-
Mock Practice: Simulate exact time divisions. Don’t pause a mock – train under pressure.
-
2-Minute Rule: Any question that takes >2 mins is a trap. Mark, skip, revisit.
Last Week Before Exam
-
Give 1 full mock every alternate day and analyse time spent per section.
-
Build a sectional routine – e.g., QA first 10 mins: arithmetic, next 10 mins: algebra.
-
Sleep well – fatigue ruins speed and accuracy.
The IPMAT has sectional timers. Practicing with mock tests helps you balance speed and accuracy and avoid wasting time on unsolvable questions.
Beyond the Exam: Life in IPM
Clearing the ipmat exam is just the beginning. The real journey starts once you step into the five year integrated program. The IPM is designed not only to teach academic concepts but also to shape you into a well-rounded professional ready for diverse management studies and real-world challenges.
The First Three Years: Building a Strong Foundation
In the first three years, students focus on a wide range of subjects beyond business — economics, psychology, sociology, law, mathematics, and even communication skills. This phase helps build a solid foundation in critical thinking, analytical skills, and language skills, preparing you for advanced management education.
Internships and Practical Exposure
Life in IPM is not limited to classrooms. Students take up:
-
A business internship in companies to gain corporate exposure
-
A social internship with NGOs to understand ground-level realities
These experiences instill empathy, responsibility, and the ability to link classroom theories with real-world problems.
Final Two Years: Management Specialisation
After the foundation phase, the focus shifts to core areas of business administration like finance, marketing, operations, and strategy. Students also study electives in new-age areas such as foreign trade, analytics, and entrepreneurship. This transition ensures you are job-ready and prepared for leadership challenges.
Campus Life and Growth
Apart from academics, life in IPM is vibrant with student clubs, case competitions, cultural festivals, and peer learning. The diversity of the batch ensures that you learn not only from professors but also from your fellow students.
Career Outcomes
Graduates of the IPM often move into leadership roles in consulting, finance, technology, or global companies. Some continue higher studies abroad, while others take entrepreneurial paths — proof of how flexible and rewarding the programme is.
Final Stage: Interview and Selection
Cracking the written ipmat exam is only half the journey. Once the shortlisted candidates are announced, the focus shifts to the personal interview round. This stage is equally important because it tests more than just your academic preparation — it evaluates your overall readiness for the integrated program in management.
During the interview, panelists often look for:
-
Language skills – your ability to express ideas clearly, use precise vocabulary, and avoid grammatical slips like incorrect subject verb agreement.
-
Critical reasoning – how logically you structure your answers, connect ideas, and defend your viewpoints.
-
Confidence and presence – showing calmness under pressure, maintaining good body language, and staying authentic.
-
Awareness – being able to discuss current affairs, management studies, or even the main idea of a reading passage you are given on the spot.
Preparation here should go beyond books. Practice mock interviews with peers or mentors, read widely, and rehearse speaking about yourself, your goals, and why you want to pursue a five year integrated program. Think of this round as your chance to showcase not only your intellect but also your personality and leadership potential.
Conclusion
The IPMAT exam is a launchpad into a dual degree programme that blends undergraduate and postgraduate management education. For young students, steady practice with IPMAT mock tests, including sectional mocks and full mocks, is the best way to gain the actual exam experience. With smart use of free resources, good time management, and confidence built through mocks, you can crack the exam and open doors to prestigious institutions, internships, and future leadership roles.
