Example Case 8

Directions for questions (19-22): Based on the information answer the questions which follow.

Eight officers of Indian Trade Service meet for a cup of coffee at Coffee Point. The officers P, Q, R, S, T, U, V and W are seated in a circle and discuss issues related to Trade in Services, Trade in Intellectual Property Rights, Investments, Tariffs, Remedies, Standards, Trade Facilitation and Subsidies not necessarily in the same order. An MBA student sitting on the next table overhears the discussion and ranks the issues as per their importance from 1 to 8. No two issues can have the same rank and no two officers can have the same position. Additional information available is:

i. P is sitting to the immediate left of S and the officer opposite to S discusses issues pertaining to Remedies.
ii. U's issue is ranked 7th and there is one officer between U and the officer whose issue is ranked 2nd.
iii. The officer whose issue is ranked 1 is not opposite to the officer whose issue is ranked 8 who represents issues related to Investments.
iv. The ranks of the issues raised by the officers sitting opposite to each other cannot be both even or both odd.
v. The officer discussing issues related to Trade in Services is sitting opposite to T. T is sitting at a gap of one place from P.
vi. R is sitting opposite to Q and represent issues related to Standards and Trade in Intellectual Property Rights not necessarily in the same order.
vii. P's issue was ranked 4th and he was discussing issues related to Tariffs and sits opposite to the officer ranked 5th who represents issues related to Subsidies.
viii. The officers representing issues related to Trade in Services and Trade Facilitation are sitting adjacent to each other.

Solution

Case solution:

P is sitting to the immediate left of S, and the officer dealing with Remedies is sitting opposite to S.

P's issue is Tariffs and is ranked 4, opposite to P, the officer dealing with Subsidies is seated whose issue is ranked 5.

T is sitting at a gap of one place from P. Hence, T can either be two places to the left of P or two places to the right of P.

Based on the position of T, the officer dealing with Trade in Services (TS) will be opposite.

This leaves us with only one spot where R and Q can be opposite to each other. This is to the immediate left of P. R or Q could take this place as the order isn't specified.

R and Q can either have issues related to Standards or Trade in Intellectual Property Rights (TIPR) in no specific order.

If the officer dealing in TS is second to the left of P, Trade Facilitation (TF) cannot be the issue of his/her immediate neighbour (as the neighbours already have issues related to Remedies or TIPR/Standards). Hence, TS can only be two places to the right of P and T is two places to the left of P.

The immediate neighbours of the officer dealing with TS are S and Q/R. Q/R already have issues related to Standard/TIPR. Hence, S is the officer that deals with TF, as TF is adjacent to TS.

If U is put in the place of TS, two places to the right or left should be rank 2. This is not possible, hence, the only place U can come is at Remedies, with the issue ranked at 7.

T is the only officer whose issue is not filled. Hence, T's issue is Investments which is ranked 8.

Rank 1 can not come opposite to Investments, hence TS is not rank 1.
Rank 1 cannot be be filled with TF, as U ranked 7 is odd and two odd ranks cannot be opposite to each other.

The only issue that can be rank 1 is with P/Q. Hence P/Q can either take rank 1 or rank 2.

V/W cannot be uniquely determined but V and W can be either Subsidies or TS in no particular order.

Ranks 3 and 6 need to be filled. S cannot take rank 3 as U which is ranked 7 is opposite and two odd ranks cannot be opposite to each other, Hence, S can take rank 6.

Which leaves us with V/W whose issues is TF which takes rank 3.

19)
The officer the discusses remedies is U and is ranked 7.

Answer: (C) U-7

20)
If V is to the immediate right of TF then W is the officer dealing with Subsidies. Hence, the officer 4th to the right of V is T dealing with Investments.

Answer: (D) Investments

21)
W can either take TS or Subsidies.

Answer: (C) Trade in Service-Subsidies

22)
The officer 4th to the right of Remedies is TF.

Answer: (B) Trade Facilitation

Answer:

19) (C) U-7
20) (D) Investments
21) (C) Trade in Service-Subsidies
22) (B) Trade Facilitation
