2. Solved Examples

Case 1

Directions for questions 1 to 2: Answer the questions on the basis of the data presented in the figure below.

[CAT 2003R]

1) Which of the following statements is correct?

(1) November rainfall exceeds 100 cm in each location.
(2) September rainfall exceeds 50 cm in each location.
(3) March rainfall is lower than September rainfall in each location.
(4) None of these.

2) Locations 6 and 7 differ from all the rest because only in these two locations,

(1) April rainfall exceeds March rainfall.
(2) Peak rainfall occurs in April.
(3) November rainfall is lower than March rainfall.
(4) April rainfall is less than 200 cm.

Solution

1) The bar graph is represented in the below table:

Rainfall in location 7 is less than 100 cm in November, then statement 1 is false.
Rainfall in location 1 is less than or equal to 50 in September, then statement 2 is false.
Rainfall of March is lower than September in each location, then statement 3 is true. This question can be answered by general observation of graph and also by forming table.

Answer: (3) March rainfall is lower than September rainfall in each location.

2) From the above table, for the locations 1 to 5 the peak rainfall occurs on November month but for location 6 and 7 the peak rainfall occurs during April.

Answer: (2) Peak rainfall occurs in April.

Answer:
1) (3) March rainfall is lower than September rainfall in each location.
2) (2) Peak rainfall occurs in April.

Case 2

[SNAP 2010]

3) What is the difference between the sales of Voveran in 2006 and those of Calpol in 2005 (in Rs. lacs)?

(1) 1000
(2) 50
(3) 100
(4) 500

4) Which brand of pain killer had the highest percentage increase in sales from 2005 to 2006?

(1) Voveran
(2) Volini
(3) Dolonex
(4) Sumo

5) Which brand of pain killer had the lowest percentage increase in sales from 2005 to 2006?

(1) 35%\%
(2) 45
%\%
(3) 55
%\%
(4) 65
%\%

Solution

3) Tabulating the above information.

The difference between the sales of Voveran in 2006 and Calpol in 2005

= 23 – 13 = 10

In the question, we are asked to express the value in lakhs.

Hence, 1000 lakhs.

Answer: (1) 1000

4) Tabulating the above information.

Going by only the pain killers which are given in options,

Only the sales of Dolonex has increased by more than 50%, while none of the other brand’s sales has crossed 50%.

Hence, Dolonex recorded the highest increase in sales.

Answer: (3) Dolonex

5) Tabulating the above information.

Of all the brands given in options, Nise recorded the lowest increment of 20%.

Answer: (4) Nise

6) Tabulating the above information.

The approximate % increase in the sales of Voveran from 2005 to 2006 is,

(2316)16×100\dfrac{(23 - 16)}{16} \times 100 = 43.7543.75

Hence, 45%

Answer: (2) 45%

Answer:
3) (1) 1000
4) (3) Dolonex
5) (4) Nise
6) (2) 45
%\%
