Example Case 4

Read the following and answer the questions that follow

The plan below shows an office block for six officers — A, B, C, D, E and F. Both B and C occupy offices to the right of the corridor (as one enters the office block) and A occupies an office to the left of the corridor. E and F occupy offices on opposite sides of the corridor but their offices do not face each other. The offices of C and D face each other. E does not have a corner office. F’s office is further down the corridor than A’s, but on the same side.
[CAT 2003(R)]

4) If E sits in his office and faces the corridor, whose office is to his left?

(1) A
(2) B
(3) C
(4) D

5) Whose office faces A’s office?

(1) B
(2) C
(3) D
(4) E

6) Who is/are F’s neighbour(s)?

(1) A only
(2) A and D
(3) C only
(4) B and C

7) D was heard telling someone to go further down the corridor to the last office on the right. To whose room was he trying to direct that person?

(1) A
(2) B
(3) C
(4) F

Solution

Case Solution:

The direction of the entrance is given. With this, we can find the offices to the right and left of the corridor. The bottom row offices are to the right of the corridor and the top row offices are to the left of the corridor. For identification purposes, let us number the offices from bottom left to top left in anticlockwise direction as given in the figure bellow.

B & C are to right of the corridor and A is to the left of the corridor. Hence we can say that B & C can take offices from 1, 2 or 3 while A can take offices from 4, 5 or 6.

C & D face each other. Hence, D is to the left of the corridor and can take offices from 4, 5 or 6.

F's office is along the same side as A, hence, F is to the left of the corridor. But it's also given F is further down the corridor than A. Therefore, F can either take office 4 or office 5. F cannot take office 6.

Since F is to the left of the corridor and E is to the opposite of F, E is along the same row as B and C and can take offices from 1, 2 or 3.

But it's given that E cannot take any corner office, which leaves E with only one possibility, office 2.

If E takes office 2, F cannot take office 5 as E and F cannot face each other. And since F can neither take office 6 nor 5, the only office F can take is 4.

C & D need to face each other and since E and F have occupied adjacent opposite offices, C & D can only take offices 1 and 6 respectively.

Hence, the remaining offices 3 and 5 will be filled by B and A respectively.

4)
If E faces the corridor, the office to the left will be office 1 which is the office of C.

Answer: (3) C

5)
The office that faces the office of A is office 2 which is E's office.

Answer: (4) E

6)
F sits in office 4 which is a corner office. The only neighbour F has is the person in the office to the left of his office. A's office is to the left of F's office. Hence the only neighbour F has is A.

Answer: (1) A only

7)
Since D is directing the person in the direction of the entrance, the last office down the corridor to the right is office 3. Office 3 belongs to B.

Answer: (2) B

Answer:
4) (3) C
5) (4) E
6) (1) A only
7) (2) B

Example Case 5

Read the following and answer the questions that follow

During the cultural week of an institute six competitions were conducted. The cultural week was inaugurated in the morning of 19th October, Wednesday and continued till 26th October. In the span of 8 days, six competitions, namely debate, folk dance, fash-p, street play, rock band, and group song, were organized along with various other cultural programs. The information available from the institute is:

i. Only one competition was held in a day.
ii. Rock band competition was not conducted on the closing day.
iii. Fash-p was conducted on the day prior to debate competition.
iv. Group song competition was conducted neither on Wednesday nor on Saturday.
v. None of the competitions were conducted on Thursday or Sunday.
vi. Street Play competition was held on Monday.
vii. There was a gap of two days between debate competition and group song competition.
[IIFT 2010]

8) The cultural week started with which competition?

(1) Fash-p competition
(2) Debate competition
(3) Street play competition
(4) Rock band competition

9) How many days gap is there between rock band competition and group song competition?

(1) Two
(2) Three
(3) Four
(4) Five

10) Which pair of competitions was conducted on Wednesday?

(1) Rock band competition and Debate competition
(2) Debate competition and Fash-p competition
(3) Rock band competition and Folk dance competition
(4) None of these

11) Which competition exactly precedes the street play competition?

(1) Rock band competition
(2) Group song competition
(3) Debate competition
(4) Fash-p competition

12) Fash-p competition follows which competition?

(1) Debate competition
(2) Street play competition
(3) Rock band competition
(4) None of these

Solution

Case Solution:

The cultural week started on 19th and went till 26th, both days included. The event was held for 8 days. 19th October is a Wednesday, and hence 26th October is also a Wednesday.

Dates are not mentioned in the clues or questions, so let us form a structure using the days of the week and the corresponding competitions that took place on these days.

There are a lot of clues about when competitions were not held in this question. Let's form a table using the not held competition clues.

Additionally, we can fill in clue 6 (street play competition is held on Monday), which is a direct clue.

Clue 7 says there is a two day gap between the debate and group song competitions. Debate cannot be held on the first day as Fash-p should be preceding it. If debate was held on Friday, group song has to be held on Monday. But street play is being held on Monday and only one competition can be held on a day. Hence, this possibility is eliminated.

The only possibility available is, debate is held on Saturday and group song is held on Tuesday.

Fash-p is held just a day before debate, hence, Fash-p is held on Friday.

There are two days and two competitions remaining. Rock cannot be held on the last day, hence, the only possible day rock can be held is on the first day which is the first Wednesday.

The last event, folk, is then held on the last day of the event which is the second Wednesday of the event week.

8)
The cultural week started with the Rock competition.

Answer: (4) Rock band competition

9)
The Rock competition was held on Wednesday and the group song competition was held on a tuesday. Hence, there are 5 days between these two days.

Answer: (4) Five

10)
There are two Wednesdays in this competition week. The first Wednesday, Rock competition was conducted and on the last day which is the second Wednesday, Folk competition was conducted.

Answer: (3) Rock band competition and Folk dance competition

11)
The competition that exactly precedes street play is held on Saturday, which is the debate competition.

Answer: (3) Debate competition

12)
There is only one competition before Fash-P competition. Fash-p competition follows Rock competition.

Answer: (3) Rock band competition

Answer:

8) (4) Rock band competition
9) (4) Five
10) (3) Rock band competition and Folk dance competition
11) (3) Debate competition
12) (3) Rock band competition
