8. Past Questions

Question 1

The length, breadth and height of a room are in the ratio 3:2:13 : 2 : 13:2:1. If the breadth and height are halved while the length is doubled, then the total area of the four walls of the room will
[CAT 2006]

remain the same
decrease by 13.64%13.64\%13.64%
decrease by 15%15\%15%
decrease by 18.75%18.75\%18.75%
decrease by 30%30\%30%

Observation/Strategy
1) We can assume values as there are no absolute values given.
2) The new breadth and height need to be halved. So, will help if their assumed values are a multiple of 2.
3) The ratio of assumed values of lll, bbb and hhh should be 3:2:13 : 2 : 13:2:1

Lets assume length (
lll), breadth (bbb), and height (hhh) are 666, 444 and 222 respectively.

There are two walls along the length and two walls along the breadth.

Original area of the four walls =
2lh2lh2lh + 2bh2bh2bh
=2×6×2+2×4×2=40= 2 \times 6 \times 2 + 2 \times 4 \times 2 = \bm{40}=2×6×2+2×4×2=40

New
lll, bbb and hhh are 121212, 222 and 111 respectively.

New area of the four walls
=2×12×1+2×2×1=28= 2 \times 12 \times 1 + 2 \times 2 \times 1 = \bm{28}=2×12×1+2×2×1=28

Change in area =
28−4040×100%=−30%\dfrac{28 - 40}{40} \times 100\% = -30\%4028−40×100%=−30%

Answer: (5) decrease by
30%30\%30%

Question 2

The ratio of number of male and female journalists in a newspaper office is 5:45 : 45:4. The newspaper has two sections, political and sports. If 303030 percent of the male journalists and 404040 percent of the female journalists are covering political news, what percentage of the journalists (approx.) in the newspaper is currently involved in sports reporting?
[IIFT 2011]

656565 percent
606060 percent
707070 percent
None of the above

Observation/Strategy
1) We can assume values as there are no absolute values given.
2) As ratio of male to female is 5:45 : 45:4, will help if the total value is a multiple of 999.
3) As
30%30\%30% of male and 40%40\%40% of female are to be found, will help if number of males and females are multiples of 101010.
4) Newspaper has exactly two sections - political and sports.

Let the total number of journalists be
909090. Number of male and female journalists is 505050 and 404040 respectively.

Journalists covering political news =
30100×50+40100×40=31\dfrac{30}{100} \times 50 + \dfrac{40}{100} \times 40 = 3110030×50+10040×40=31

Journalists covering Sports news =
90−31=5990 - 31 = 5990−31=59

Sports journalists as
%\%% of total = 5990×100%=5909%=65.56%\dfrac{59}{90} \times 100\% = \dfrac{590}{9}\% = 65.56\%9059×100%=9590%=65.56%

Answer: (1)
656565 percent

Question 3

The pre-paid recharge of Airtel gives 21%21\%21% less talktime than the same price pre-paid recharge of Vodafone. The post-paid talktime of Airtel is 12%12\%12% more than its pre-paid recharge, having the same price. Further, the post-paid talktime of same price of Vodafone is 15%15\%15% less than its pre-paid recharge. How much percent less / more talktime can one get from the Airtel post-paid service compared to the post-paid service of Vodafone?
[IIFT 2015]

3.9%3.9\% 3.9%more
4.7%4.7\%4.7% less
4.7%4.7\%4.7% more
2.8%2.8\%2.8% less

Observation/Strategy
1) We can assume values as there are no absolute values given.
2) Prices are always equal and talktimes are compared.
3) Comparison is between two service providers - Airtel and Vodafone.
4) Each of the companies have two types of recharges - pre-paid and post-paid.
5) We can form a 2×22 \times 22×2 table and then fill the values (to avoid silly mistakes).

Let the talktime on pre-paid recharge of Vodafone be
100100100. Pre-paid of Airtel is 21%21\%21% less at 797979.

Type Prepaid Postpaid
Vodafone 100100100
Airtel 797979

Post-paid of Airtel =
1.12×79∼88.51.12 \times 79 \sim 88.51.12×79∼88.5

Post-paid of Vodafone =
0.85×100=850.85 \times 100 = 850.85×100=85

Type Prepaid Postpaid
Vodafone 100100100 858585
Airtel 797979 88.4888.4888.48

“Post-paid Airtel talktime is
x%x\%x% less/more than post-paid Vodafone” is the statement. Note that comparison is with Vodafone post-paid.

x=88.5−8585×100%x = \dfrac{88.5 - 85}{85} \times 100\%x=8588.5−85×100%

=7017%∼4.1%= \dfrac{70}{17}\% \sim 4.1\%=1770%∼4.1%

Note that none of the options are correct here.

∴\therefore∴ Closest option of 3.9%3.9\%3.9% more is deemed to be correct.

Answer: (1) 3.9%3.9\%3.9% more

Note: Kindly remember to choose the closest option when none of the options have the actual answer and 'None of the Above' is not in the answer options.
